What Perri Is About
One of the Disney productions that combined real wildlife footage with an invented narrative, a form the studio gave its own name to. Adapted from a novel, it follows Perri, a female squirrel in the forest, across the seasons: the search for food, the threat of the marten, winter, and finding a mate. The images come from real animals but the story is built out of human feeling, giving the animals names, characters and intentions. Seen now it is both an early piece of wildlife filmmaking and a record of how thoroughly we turn nature into story. The narration and the score put the scenes into something close to the rhythm of a fairy tale. It is short and openly aimed at a family audience.
