What Perro callejero Is About
An abandoned boy survives on the streets of Mexico City by stealing. Begging, lifting, earning a place in a gang, ending up in juvenile detention: the sequence of that life is well established. Things change on the day he decides to steal from the priest who has been helping him, because now he has something to lose. Gilberto Gazcón's film is among the best known of the street-kid pictures that were enormously popular in Mexico around 1980, with Valentín Trujillo in the lead. It shows poverty without turning it into a lesson: theft here is not a flaw of character but a trade the circumstances impose.
