What Photographing Fairies Is About

Charles Castle, a photographer, lost his wife not long after their wedding and has felt nothing since. He goes to the war and photographs the trenches, and comes back into the same emptiness. Then somebody hands him photographs said to show fairies. He goes to Burkinwell, a village that looks peaceful, intending to prove them fakes. Nick Willing's 1997 film draws on Steve Szilagyi's novel and on the real Cottingley fairy photographs, which Arthur Conan Doyle believed in. But it is not a story about a hoax, it is a story about grief: the man wants the fairies to be real not because he believes it but because he needs it. Ben Kingsley is in the cast.
