What Pierrepoint: The Last Hangman Is About
Albert Pierrepoint carried on the trade of his father and uncle and became the most prolific hangman in Britain, delivering groceries by day and telling nobody what he did. After the war, hanging hundreds of war criminals in Germany brought him a fame he had not wanted, and when opposition to capital punishment grew that same fame turned against him. At the centre of this film, with Timothy Spall in the part, is the man's obsession with doing the job properly. One correction: the last hangman of the title is wrong, since he resigned in 1956 and hangings went on until 1964.
