What Funny Cow Is About
Northern England in the 1970s. A woman decides to take everything her childhood and her marriage did to her, carry it on stage and make material out of it. She starts doing stand-up in working men's clubs in front of drunk, entirely male audiences, and learns what it takes to make a room laugh that had no intention of laughing. Adrian Shergold's 2018 film never even gives her a name; she stays Funny Cow to the end. Maxine Peake plays her hard and asks for no sympathy. Tony Pitts, who also appears in it, wrote the script. Domestic violence is not the background to the comedy here, it is placed right in the middle of it.
