Planet Single

Ania, a music teacher living alone, gets stood up on an internet date and catches the eye of a popular television host. He offers to turn her dating disasters into segments for his show. The deal takes both of them somewhere neither planned. Mitja Okorn directed. Agnieszka Wiedlocha plays Ania, Maciej Stuhr the host. The interesting part is the director's nationality. Okorn is Slovenian and made consecutive record-breaking hits in Poland. Planet Single sold over 1.9 million tickets in 2016, the biggest Polish release of the year, and grew into a series with two sequels. The film runs the American romantic comedy formula almost by the book, but sets its rhythm to the humour of Polish television. Okorn later moved to Hollywood for Life in a Year, which did not land the way his Polish films did. Who it is for: romantic comedy viewers who do not mind a formula executed well. Who it is not for: anyone hunting surprise; the story is predictable throughout.
