What Planetarian: Hoshi no Hito Is About

Biological and nuclear war have wrecked the world. The cities are empty, the sky is permanently clouded and nobody sees the stars. An old man travels about with a portable projector and shows people the stars wherever he stops. Years earlier he met a robot in a ruined shopping centre, and the work came to him from there. Katsuichi Nakayama's anime is adapted from Key's visual novel and expands the short episodes made earlier. The telling builds no action; the subject is going on carrying something people have lost. The robot character keeps running her own program, and that repetition carries the emotional weight of the film. The tone is calm and sorrowful.
