In Oksana Bychkova’s 2008 Russian film, Masha is a translator who has shut herself inside her work after a failed marriage; she translates serious literature and it has become a kind of shelter. Lack of money forces her into a job she never wanted: interpreting at a workshop run by an English puppeteer. His profession and his way of looking at ordinary life do not fit the arrangement she has made for herself, and the film keeps the misunderstandings between them halfway between comedy and sadness. Translation works as the film’s metaphor too: knowing somebody’s language turns out not to be the same as understanding them. Madlen Dzhabrailova plays Masha.
