What Porridge Is About
Fletcher is the most experienced inmate in the prison; he knows the system better than anyone and uses it. He has two problems. The first is Beale, the new officer, far harder than the last one. The second is Grouty, who actually runs the place and is putting an escape together. Fletcher wants nothing to do with it, and nobody asks him. The plan is to go during the confusion of a football match. When his friend Godber is injured in the match everything comes apart, and Fletcher finds himself outside without meaning to be. All he wants now is to get back in without being seen. Dick Clement directs the British comedy; ninety-three minutes, with Ronnie Barker as Fletcher and Richard Beckinsale as Godber. It is the film of the television series of the same name, which was widely watched in Britain in the seventies, and the series' own writers wrote it.
