Pretty Boys

Tompi's 2019 Indonesian film follows two childhood friends who want to be famous. They run away to Jakarta and end up as paid audience members on a show. The opportunity offered to them there runs through being made ridiculous. The film is about how television entertainment uses people; the narrative places the cost of fame inside the comedy. Vincent Rompies and Deddy Mahendra Desta lead, both known from television. The tone is fast and the close returns to the friendship. Who it's for: those who like Indonesian comedy and television satire. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a serious critique of the industry; the film puts the comedy first.
