What Prison on Fire II Is About
Ching is still inside, with not long left on his sentence. But the arrangement in there has changed: there is constant fighting between the Chinese and Vietnamese prisoners, and the guards stoke it because it suits them. Ching ends up between the two sides. At a certain point the alliance he makes puts him on a road that could cost him more than his freedom. Ringo Lam directs this sequel to the 1987 Prison on Fire, with Chow Yun-fat again as Ching. It belongs to the hard prison-film tradition Hong Kong cinema built in the 1980s, and it shows the violence on the side of the guards as well as the prisoners.
