Priyamaanavale

K. Selvabharathy's 2000 Tamil film follows Vijay, who marries his father's secretary. The marriage rests on an agreement that lets him end it after twelve months. The film uses that period as a countdown. Vijay does not take the marriage seriously, and the woman's labour and patience in the house shift the balance; the narrative follows the commercial form and moves toward an emotional close. Vijay and Simran lead, with Vivek carrying the comic line. The songs and fights sit where the form places them. Who it's for: those who like popular Tamil cinema of the early two thousands. Who it's not for: viewers expecting an equal relationship; the film carries the conventions of its period.
