What Promise of Pisa Is About
A young Dutch Moroccan trumpet player tries to get into a select conservatory in Amsterdam and to hold his place there. He has the talent, but the language of the school, its habits and its circles are not his; the life at home and the life there resemble each other not at all. His name and where he comes from constantly call for an explanation. The film is about an immigrant young man trying to move up a class and what it costs him, and it shows music not as an escape but as a door that has to be got through. Shahine El-Hamus plays the lead in Norbert ter Hall’s hundred and five minute Dutch film, completed in 2019.
