What Proof of the Man Is About
When an American is murdered at a Japanese inn, the Tokyo detective Munesue follows the killer’s trail as far as New York. There he works with a New York policeman named Shuftan and the two of them piece the case together; what they have to go on is a straw hat and an old poem, and those clues lead the investigation back to the wounds the postwar years left behind. Junya Sato’s hundred and thirty two minute film was adapted from the bestselling novel by Seiichi Morimura and produced by Haruki Kadokawa, and it puts racial discrimination and the unfinished accounts of the occupation years at its centre. George Kennedy, Yusaku Matsuda and Mariko Okada star in the Japanese American co-production, released on 6 October 1977.
