Pulang

Among the Malays known in the 1940s for their seamanship, Othman from a small village in Malacca sets out to work on the international lines. He leaves his wife Thom and his children behind, promising to come home one day with a fortune and a pride he has earned. But the years pass, the wages of a deckhand are never enough, and ashamed to return, the man settles in Liverpool. Sixty years later his grandson Ahmad travels to the other side of the world to find him, and comes to understand what the waiting of the family left behind actually meant. Kabir Bhatia’s hundred and twenty minute Malaysian film started from a true story; Remy Ishak plays Othman and Puteri Aishah plays Thom. It was completed in 2018 and turns the failure to keep a promise of return into a family story.
