What Pure Hearts Is About
Agnese is seventeen, lives with her mother, goes to church, and is about to take a vow of chastity until marriage. Stefano is twenty-five, struggles to hold his temper, and works as a guard on a car park in Rome that borders a Roma camp; his job is to keep the people from the camp away. The two meet by chance, and what forms between them is something neither the church nor the neighbourhood will allow. De Paolis caricatures neither the world of faith nor the excluded camp. The ending is uncomfortable because it gives nobody an easy way out.
