What Quiet Bliss Is About
Edoardo Winspeare’s 2014 film is set in Salento, in the south of Italy. A small family tailoring business cannot survive against cheap imported clothing and closes; the house is sold to settle the debts, and three generations of women move back to their mother’s place in the countryside. With the one brother gone abroad, the work of finding a way through falls to Adele. The film tells the crisis through the rhythm of daily labour rather than through headlines: land, animals, kitchen, debt. The cast are not professionals, and the leads are the director’s own wife, Celeste Casciaro, and his stepdaughter Laura Licchetta. It premiered at the Berlin festival in 2014.
