What Rails & Ties Is About
Tom Stark drives freight trains. One morning a car is parked across the tracks with a woman inside and her son beside her, and by the time the train has stopped only the boy is alive. Suspended from work and accused of never having touched the brake, Tom is left at home with the conversation about his wife's illness that he has been avoiding for months. Then the dead woman's son turns up at their door and moves in. Alison Eastwood's first film as director puts Kevin Bacon between guilt and an attachment he did not ask for, with Marcia Gay Harden as his wife and Miles Heizer as the boy.
