What Rain over Santiago Is About
Helvio Soto made this semi-fictional account of the 11 September 1973 coup that removed Salvador Allende two years after the fact, shooting in France and Bulgaria. The title is the coded phrase said to have been broadcast as the signal to begin the operation. Soto, a Chilean living in exile himself, described the film as a tribute to Popular Unity, to Allende and to the journalist Augusto Olivares. Apart from Soto and the Chilean actress Patricia Guzman, the cast and crew were entirely French and Bulgarian, with a score by Astor Piazzolla and camerawork by Georges Barsky. Bibi Andersson and Annie Girardot are among the players.
