Raja Rani

John and Regina marry in a church, both of them having agreed reluctantly to keep their families happy. At home they fight constantly, because each has left someone behind. The film builds its real story by telling those two pasts separately, so the hostility in the present only makes sense as the flashbacks open up. This was Atlee's first film, and none of the noise of his later blockbusters is here yet. Arya and Nayanthara carry the couple's present while Jai and Nazriya Nazim carry the relationships that came before. Its best insight is that these two can only recognise each other after each has described their own loss. It opened on 27 September 2013 to strong reviews and won four Tamil Nadu state film awards along with two Filmfare South awards. Its flaws are length and the comic interludes, which keep interrupting the tone the drama has just built. Who it is for: viewers who like Tamil romantic drama. Who it is not for: anyone wanting a short film with a single line.
