What Rang Rasiya Is About
Ketan Mehta's 2014 film follows the life of the nineteenth-century Indian painter Raja Ravi Varma. Varma gave the goddesses human faces and, through printing, carried those images into ordinary homes; cheap prints spread them across the whole country. That same reach took him to court: religious groups filed a case calling the paintings obscene. The film follows both the trial and the relationship between the painter and his model. Randeep Hooda and Nandana Sen lead. The production had its own long fight with the censor board, which held it up for years before finally certifying it for adults without cutting the nudity.
