Ready or Not

In Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s 2019 film, Grace draws a card on her wedding night and gets hide and seek. One mansion appears on screen, but there never was one house. Cinematographer Brett Jutkiewicz says two mansions were joined to read as a single home, and that the closing scene went to a third location, the only one that allowed practical blood. Anyone tracking how the rooms connect catches the seam. The light comes out of the set too. Every fireplace was LED, and candles were filled out with LED tubes hung outside the frame. The bloody finale was shot near the start of the schedule, the place sheeted in plastic, the crew in protective gear, and clear filters rotated in front of the lens between takes. The wedding dress works as the film’s clock. Costume designer Avery Plewes had twenty four copies built and made a flowchart of everything that happens to Grace and the dress, letting that decide fabric and sleeve length. The state of the gown says where you are in the night. Made for six million dollars, it took 57.6 million worldwide. A good fit if you want blood poured on set and a gown whose destruction was scheduled in advance. Not for anyone who needs the house to hold together as one floor plan.
