What Rebellion Is About

April 1988, the island of Ouvéa in New Caledonia. A group of Kanak independence fighters take thirty gendarmes hostage. Three hundred soldiers are sent from France. Two men are at the centre: Philippe Legorjus, the special unit commander who wants to negotiate, and Alphonse Dianou, who leads the hostage-takers. Both try to talk, but the second round of the presidential election is coming in Paris and a result is wanted at once for political reasons. Who died in the assault, and who was killed after surrendering, is still argued about. Mathieu Kassovitz wrote, directed and edited it, and plays Legorjus.
