What Recorder: The Marion Stokes Project Is About
Matt Wolf's 2019 documentary is about Marion Stokes, who recorded television for thirty years. Stokes began in 1975 and taped around the clock until her death in 2012, leaving tens of thousands of cassettes. The argument is that this was archival work. Stokes wanted to record how the news was altered over time; the narrative also shows that the obsession strained her family and filled the house with tapes. Her son and those close to her speak. Passages selected from the recordings serve as examples of the news language of the period. The narrative presents her as neither hero nor patient. Who it's for: those who like media history and unusual portraits. Who it's not for: viewers expecting an orderly biography; the documentary leaves many questions about its subject open.
