Red Cherry

The film is about two Chinese children sent, in the winter of 1940, to an international children’s home outside Moscow. Chuchu and Luo Xiaoban are both orphans and have nobody but each other. When Germany attacks the Soviet Union the home breaks up. Chuchu falls into German hands and is held by an officer, a man who has made an obsession of tattooing women’s bodies. The film does not lay that part out as spectacle, but it does not hide what came of it either. The two children try separately to stay alive inside the war. The work is based on a true story. It was named best film at the Golden Rooster awards in 1996 and was the most watched domestic production in China that year. Ye Daying’s hundred and twenty minute Chinese film was completed in 1995.
