What Red Headed Stranger Is About
The preacher Julian Shay walks into a saloon, draws his gun and kills his wife and the man she had left him for. That is the beginning of his change from a God fearing preacher into a ruthless outlaw. The film does not justify the change and does not make a hero of the man; it looks at how faith can cover over violence. The account comes from the vein that turns the traditional moulds of the western inside out. Its scenes are held quiet and slow, and the music is set inside the story. How the town treats the man is the second line of the film. The woman who is killed is not used as a justification. Willie Nelson and Morgan Fairchild appear in William D. Wittliff’s hundred and five minute American film, completed in 1986.
