Retrograde

The documentary covers the last months of the twenty year war in Afghanistan through the close relationship between American Green Berets and the Afghan officers they trained. Matthew Heineman embedded with them and recorded what the withdrawal decision looked like on the ground. After release a serious problem emerged: a member of a mine clearing team whose face appears in the film was seized by the Taliban and died from injuries sustained in custody. His family has sued, National Geographic pulled the film from its streaming platforms, and other Afghans shown in it were reported to be in hiding. That argument about responsibility is now part of the film.
