What Reunion Is About
An elderly lawyer living in America goes back to Germany for the first time since he was young. What he wants is an answer about what became of a friendship formed at a Stuttgart school in 1932: that year the son of a well off Jewish doctor and Konradin, heir to a German aristocratic family, were inseparable, and the rise of Hitler first tested and then severed the bond. It is adapted from Fred Uhlman's short novel of 1971. Harold Pinter wrote the screenplay, going through six drafts and two different endings. Jerry Schatzberg directed, with Jason Robards as the older man and Christien Anholt and Samuel West as the boys.
