What Ring of Spies Is About
The film is built on the real events of the Portland spy ring trial in Britain. A navy clerk who is unhappy with his job and with himself is transferred to a secret research establishment, and Czech intelligence draws him in with a mixture of money and blackmail and starts asking for documents. He also attaches to himself the secretary who has charge of the most secret papers, and for a while the two of them live comfortably on what the work brings in. When the British authorities begin closing the circle, one question is left: how far can they trust each other. Bernard Lee and William Sylvester appear in Robert Tronson’s ninety minute British film, completed in 1964.
