Anna Frolovtseva What Roads to Koktebel Is About
The man has lost his wife and his job as well. He sets out from Moscow with his eleven-year-old son, heading for his sister in Koktebel on the Black Sea. With no money they ride freight trains, walk, take work along the way. The longer the journey runs, the more the distance between father and son changes. Boris Khlebnikov and Aleksei Popogrebsky directed the film together; it is a first feature for both. It took the FIPRESCI prize at Moscow and an award at Karlovy Vary. The telling speaks little, uses long takes, and never leaves the landscape empty. The boy believes in his father's plan while the father slowly stops believing in it.
