What Rockaway Is About
A grown man narrates the summer of 1994. That summer, in East Rockaway in New York, he and his older brother were living under their father's violence and watching their mother take it too. The time they spend with a few boys they meet at the basketball court is the only way out. It is John J. Budion's first feature and comes largely out of his own childhood; the two brothers are written from him and his brother. The film does not turn the violence into a spectacle; it is about the boys holding on to each other. The adult voice carries it, and rather than defending the idea of revenge it remembers what that idea looked like at that age.
