What Rockfield : The Studio on the Farm Is About
Fifty years ago in the Welsh countryside two brothers, Kingsley and Charles Ward, were preparing to take over the family dairy farm and dreaming of making music. They cleared the barns, built a studio inside the farmhouse and put the musicians in their grandmother’s spare bedroom. Without meaning to, they had opened the world’s first independent residential recording studio. Black Sabbath, Queen, Robert Plant, Iggy Pop, Simple Minds, The Stone Roses, Oasis, Coldplay and the Manic Street Preachers all worked at Rockfield over the decades, and Bohemian Rhapsody was recorded there. Hannah Berryman’s documentary tells it through archive, animation and interviews, and keeps a family business fighting to survive in frame alongside the music.
