Romper Stomper

A group of skinheads in Melbourne attack Vietnamese families in their neighbourhood. When one attack goes wrong the group starts to break apart. The film never justifies these people, but it does not explain them either; the narrative follows not politics but the hierarchy inside the group and its collapse. That choice caused argument on release, with some critics arguing the film made the violence attractive. Geoffrey Wright directed. It is the film that made Russell Crowe's name. Daniel Pollock, who shares the lead, died shortly after filming. A real warning: racist violence, hate speech and a rape are shown directly throughout. It is a heavy watch and the film does not try to lighten it.
