What Ronin-gai Is About

At the end of the Edo period, several masterless samurai are living in the brothel quarter of the city, drinking and humbling themselves, and nobody asks them what they used to be. When a band of armed men begins killing the women of the district and no one intervenes, these ronin act. Their aim is not some great cause but to protect the people they live among and, for once, to climb out of their own fallen state. The women here are not figures to be rescued but people with reckonings of their own. Kazuo Kuroki’s hundred and seventeen minute Japanese film is a remake of an older production of the same name; Yoshio Harada and Kanako Higuchi appear.
