What The Assassination of Ryoma Is About
The film covers the last three days in the life of Sakamoto Ryoma, the loyalist who tried to unite the Choshu and Satsuma clans and opened the way to the Meiji Restoration. But it is not a story of heroism: Kazuo Kuroki shows Ryoma and the people around him as ordinary and often ridiculous. Black and white, grainy images and a handheld camera deliberately break the usual weight of a period film. Because the ending is known from the start, the tension comes from waiting rather than from the event. Yoshio Harada and Kaori Momoi appear in the hundred and eighteen minute Japanese production, completed in 1974.
