What The Lower Depths Is About
Adapted from Maxim Gorky's play, with Kurosawa moving the story out of Russia and into Edo-period Japan. In a makeshift shelter at the bottom of a pit live a thief, an actor, a prostitute, a craftsman who lost his trade and a dying woman; every one of them says they will get out one day and none of them does. An old pilgrim arrives handing out consolation, and the real question becomes whether those lies help. Almost all of it happens in one space; the camera barely goes outside.
