Run All Night

This is the third film Jaume Collet-Serra made with Liam Neeson in a row, and it gives its secret away at once. Jimmy Conlon shoots the son of his oldest friend in the first act, so the rest is not a puzzle but two fathers walking toward each other. Everything happens across one rainy December night, and the film keeps that night on a clock: a Rangers and Devils game heard in the background early on later becomes the crowd pouring out of Madison Square Garden that Jimmy and his son vanish into. Between scenes the camera lifts off and glides over the city to the next address, which reads New York as a map and keeps the distance between the two sides present. Martin Ruhe shot it, and Tom Holkenborg, working as Junkie XL, wrote the score. Brad Ingelsby sold the screenplay to the studio under the title The All-Nighter. Ed Harris plays the friend on the other side and Vincent D’Onofrio the detective who has been after Jimmy for years, while Nick Nolte turns up uncredited as Jimmy’s brother. A good fit if you want Neeson pursued rather than pursuing, and pursued over something he actually did. Not for viewers who expect Jimmy to walk away from the bill; the film will not close without collecting it.
