What Saajan Is About

Aman writes poetry under the name Sagar and sells a great many books, but the person closest to him has no idea. Akash, with whom he shares his life, is in love with Puja. Puja has fallen for Sagar without ever having seen him, purely through the poems. Rather than explain, Aman withdraws and buries what he feels so that his friend can be happy. At three hours the film carries the triangle to the end as full melodrama. It was one of the most widely seen Indian films of the early nineties, remembered as much for putting Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan in the same frame as for Madhuri Dixit. The Nadeem-Shravan songs took on a life apart from the picture, and the album was among the biggest sellers of those years. The idea holding the whole structure up is poetry standing in for a love letter.
