Sagara Sangamam

K. Viswanath's 1983 Telugu film follows Balakrishna, devoted to classical dance. A bond forms between him and Madhavi, who admires his talent, but circumstances separate them and over the years he gives himself to drink. The subject is that talent alone is not enough. Balakrishna refuses to fit his art into a commercial mould, and that choice leaves him alone in terms of livelihood, recognition and relationship; the narrative neither exalts nor punishes it. Kamal Haasan leads and performs the dance sequences himself. Viswanath was known for films centred on the classical arts; the music and choreography serve a function inside the narrative. The tone is close to melodrama and the final section is heavy. Who it's for: those interested in Indian classical dance and eighties Telugu cinema. Who it's not for: viewers looking for a measured emotional register; the film openly reaches for feeling towards the end.
