What Samurai Fiction Is About
When the clan's ceremonial sword is stolen, a young retainer who badly overrates his own skill sets off after the thief with two equally hopeless friends. The man they are chasing turns out to be a genuinely lethal swordsman, and the first encounter ends the way real fights do rather than the way the boys imagined. Recovering in the house of a fighter who gave up the blade years ago, the young man learns something slower than revenge. Hiroyuki Nakano shoots almost the whole film in black and white, saves red for blood, and scores it with anachronistic electric guitar written by Tomoyasu Hotei, who also plays the villain.
