What Samurai Saga Is About
Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac, moved to seventeenth-century Japan. A poet-swordsman as sharp with words as with a blade loves a woman who sees him only as a friend, so he puts his own poetry in another man’s mouth and lets him do the courting. Hiroshi Inagaki keeps the adaptation faithful and carries the whole ache of the play into the samurai world. Toshirō Mifune drops the noise he is famous for and gives one of his most delicate performances. Akira Ifukube wrote the music and Kazuo Yamada shot it. The Japanese title translates roughly as the life of a master swordsman.
