What Sanctuary Is About

Summer 1968. While outside there are youth movements, miniskirts and protests against the war, fourteen-year-old Wolfgang is taken from his family and sent to a church-run home for boys. What they call education there is cutting peat in the bog, beatings and constant humiliation. He refuses to submit, and there is a limit to how long that can hold. The film is about a real institution. Hundreds of thousands of children were made to work in homes like it in Germany in the fifties and sixties, and the state only set up a compensation fund in 2012.
