Sanshiro Sugata

Sanshiro Sugata is a young man. He is wrestling with troubles of his own. One day he takes up judo. His teacher is called Shogoro Yano. Yano is a devout and demanding man. The local jujitsu masters have no love for him. Jujitsu was then the older and better accepted of the two. Sugata grows strong quickly. He uses what he has learned to win respect. Yano tells him that is not enough. There is a spiritual side to judo that he has not yet reached. In the end he has to fight the father of the woman he loves, and that is where he understands what judo means. A remake of two films by Akira Kurosawa, the hundred and fifty nine minute picture stars Yuzo Kayama and Toshiro Mifune, a Japanese production Seiichiro Uchikawa finished in 1965.
