What Santa and the Three Bears Is About
This 1970 American animation is a forty-six minute Christmas story. Two bear cubs want to meet Santa; their mother tells them there is no such person and that they should be going into hibernation. When the park ranger involves himself, the wish may yet come true. The film carries the manner of children’s television of the period: plain drawing, songs, and a lesson delivered without much indirection. Barry Mahon and Tony Benedict made it together, with familiar voices of the era including Hal Smith and Jean Vander Pyl. It went on being shown on television for years afterwards. The tension between the mother bear insisting on hibernation and the cubs refusing to sleep is the whole idea.
