What Santosh Is About
After her husband dies on duty, Santosh takes over his post as a police constable through a government scheme that gives widows their husbands' jobs. She starts work in a part of northern India where the law exists mostly on paper. When a low-caste girl is found raped and murdered she joins the investigation alongside inspector Sharma and learns how the job actually runs, with caste, gender and violence all in the same room. Shot in India and in Hindi, it was nonetheless submitted for the Oscar by Britain. In India it did not pass the censors and was not released.
