Sara'S

Jude Anthany Joseph's 2021 Malayalam film follows Sara, who wants to make films. She does not want children; she marries Jeevan believing they agree on this, and an unexpected pregnancy tests that agreement. The question is whose decision it is. Pressure from family and those around them comes quickly; the narrative defends Sara and does not leave her carrying the burden of justifying her choice. Anna Ben leads. The tone is light and the humour everyday. The film caused argument in Kerala; its handling of abortion was both defended and criticised, with some holding that it simplified the medical process. Who it's for: those who like contemporary Malayalam drama and woman-centred narrative. Who it's not for: viewers for whom abortion would sit heavily; the film places it at the centre.
