Sathuranga Vettai

H. Vinoth's first film is a crime comedy built on confidence tricks. Its central character has lived for years off small-scale fraud; when he is caught, his own partners take the money and run, and one of the people he swindled hires someone to kill him. What the film does best is show in detail how the scams work. Fake gold, a fake job offer, a fake investment: each method is explained step by step and the viewer is placed inside the con man's mind rather than the victim's. That makes the film morally uncomfortable, which is Vinoth's intent. Natarajan Subramaniam leads, and for someone whose actual profession is cinematography his performance here is surprisingly relaxed. It was made on a low budget and counted among the successful examples of independent production in Tamil cinema. Who it's for: those who like con stories and low-budget Tamil crime films. Who it's not for: viewers looking for a morally clear hero; the film defends nobody and delivers no lesson at the end.
