Satyaprem Ki Katha

Satyaprem lives in Ahmedabad, has failed his law exams repeatedly, and is treated at home as useless. He is one-sidedly in love with Katha, who has not recovered from her break-up with Tapan. A marriage arranged between the families puts them in the same house, but getting Katha out of where she has shut herself requires something else: Satyaprem waiting, and asking for nothing. Sameer Vidwans opens in the shape of a romantic comedy and then goes somewhere quite different. In the second half the subject is not love but consent, and how to live alongside grief. Mainstream Hindi cinema rarely takes that on this directly. Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani lead, with Gajraj Rao and Supriya Pathak carrying the family side. Gujarati middle-class life is built out in detail throughout. Who it's for: Viewers who like Indian romantic drama, family narratives, and heavy material handled in a soft register. Who it's not for: The handling simplifies at points, and the resolution runs through the male character's sacrifice. It is also long.
