What Save the Cinema Is About
Sara Sugarman's 2022 film starts from a true story. In 1993, in the Welsh town of Carmarthen, Liz Evans, a hairdresser who also ran a youth theatre, launched a campaign to keep the Lyric from closing. With the mayor of the day, Richard Goodridge, the effort reached as far as Hollywood, and the town ended up with a special screening of Jurassic Park. Instead of turning that into a tale of heroics, the film would rather explain why one room with a screen matters in a small place. Samantha Morton plays Liz, with Tom Felton and Jonathan Pryce alongside her. Warm, modest, and at times too soft on itself.
