September 1923

In September 1923 a great earthquake struck the Kanto region of Japan. False rumours spread across the country afterwards. The rumours were directed at Koreans. None of them were true. Vigilante groups formed all the same. Large numbers of Koreans were killed. The film takes place in a village during those days. The village is Fukuda, in Chiba. Travelling peddlers arrive there. They had come from Kagawa and they were Japanese. The dialect they spoke sounded foreign to the villagers. A crowd took them for Koreans, and nine of them were killed, among them women and children. The film shows how it came step by step, with Arata Iura and Rena Tanaka in the hundred and thirty seven minute film, a Japanese production Tatsuya Mori finished in 2023.
